Warming people’s lives, one stitch at a time

The highly anticipated Stuartholme Wrapped with Love Knit-In charity event was on again today and provided a priceless opportunity for the community to come together and knit 25cm-squared yarn patches to be later knitted together into blankets for those in need.

Stuartholme Mother-of-two and past student Diane Neve has been involved with the knit-ins for over two years.

“It’s a very simply and easy thing to do but it means so much to those in need,” she said.

The project started in 1992 by Sonia Gidley-King from Stuartholme’s sister school, Kincoppal - Rose Bay School, in Sydney.

She was brought to action after watching footage of the civil war in Mozambique on TV.

Sonia was horrified by the suffering of those during the war who were left with nothing.

She then began to gather knitting materials from around her home and with the help of a few friends, sent 38 wraps over to the war zone.

Since then, more than 290,000 blankets and wraps have been given away to people all over the world.

Some countries to receive the blankets include Uganda, Zimabwe, Tanzania and Haiti.
Sadly Sonia passed away in 2010 but her legacy lives on.

Diane encourages anyone wanting to take part to come along to the next knit-in.

“Everyone is welcome to come. The next event will be July 26.”

“Simply bring along 4mm needles, 8 pty yarn, cast on 50-55 stitches and start knitting up squares.”

Donations of 8 pty wool, yarn and 4mm needles are also greatly appreciated.
