“At Homeless Connect, people were able to have a lovely breakfast and lunch and also access medical and dental care,” Year 12 student Kate Kelly said.
“We also helped the guests find information on housing, employment and government assistance that they may not know about.”
“Children were also able to make Christmas cards at the arts and crafts table, which was really special.”
Emily Ferguson said the biggest lesson she learned from the experience was to break down the stereotype of what a homeless person is like.
"It can happen to anyone, and I think that’s the greatest message for me to take away from this.”
Director of Mission, Andree Rice said the experience was invaluable for the girls.
“It’s wonderful to see the girls learning about the causes of homelessness and being able to reach out in friendship to people who are often ignored and unjustly treated in mainstream society” she said.
“Many Stuartholme students said they want to volunteer again at Homeless Connect or be part of an ex students’ Social Awareness Action Group for 2014, which is really inspirational.”
Year 12 Student Claudia French said Stuartholme School students really enjoyed their ‘Meet and Greet’ experiences at Homeless Connect.
“Being a happy face for the guests when they come in is really important.”
“With Christmas fast approaching, it’s a great time to reflect on how much we have and what we can give to those in greater need than us.”
Donations of canned food and clothing are always accepted by Homeless Connect.
