We planted a Sea of Hands on the Jelly Bean Lawn in the morning then had a service in the Chapel with Uncle Albert Holt, Inala elder and friend to Stuartholme, as our special guest. Uncle Albert’s book, Forcibly Removed, details his family’s removal from their traditional lands to Cherbourg Mission. His Cherbourg stories are sober reminders to all non-indigenous Australians that some of our wrongdoings to Indigenous Australians happened very recently indeed.
This week has seen renewed media attention on Indigenous over-representation in the prison system and a marked increase in Aboriginal deaths in custody in the past five years. There is still much to be done before true reconciliation is possible.
