Refugee Homework Club Awards

Yeronga-Awards-Night---webIt was with great pleasure that she was able to award two $500 bursaries to the Best/Most Hardworking Female and Male Homework Club attendee.

"It was a wonderful opportunity to be able to reward students at Yeronga who have tried very hard this year to improve their grades," Ms Rice said.

The female awardee was Frozan Sadat and the male was Nyah Gondah.

The money was raised from the Stuartholme Café Society through the sale of hot beverages to staff and students.

Year 12 student from Stuartholme Claudia Gaines was one of the Homework Club members who presented the awards with Ms Rice.

“The students at Homework Club approach their studies with incredible dedication and commitment despite often difficult social and economic circumstances, having recently arrived in Australia as refugee," Claudia said.

“It’s really quite special to be able to celebrate that."

Stuartholme has had a partnership with Yeronga State High School for almost two years and girls from Stuartholme go to Yeronga every Thursday afternoon to provide academic support at Homework Club.

“It’s a reciprocal, two way relationship and we learn from their students and their community far more than we give,” Ms Rice said.

“Their students teach us about resilience, hope and dedication to study.”

“A large percentage of the Yeronga students are from immigrant and refugee backgrounds.”

Stuartholme and Yeronga look forward to their friendship growing in 2014.
